Topic: Zithromax in Mexico - What's it Called?

Posted by: CuriousTraveler

Hey everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Mexico and was prescribed some Zithromax for a potential infection. I've heard that drug names can vary from country to country, so I wanted to know if anyone knows what Zithromax is called in Mexico? Also, any tips on where to get it once there?

Thanks!

Hi CuriousTraveler,

Zithromax is a brand name for the antibiotic Azithromycin. In Mexico, you might find it under various generic names or other brands. One common name you'll come across in Mexico is "Azitral." Other generic versions of azithromycin are also available and sold under different brand names.

When you're in Mexico, make sure to check with a local pharmacy about availability. It's always good to have the generic name (azithromycin) handy as it will help pharmacists understand what you need more easily.

Hope this helps!

Thanks MedHelper! That’s really helpful.

Just to make sure, if I go to a pharmacy and ask for "Azitral," they should be able to get me the right medication? And is it generally easy to find in pharmacies?

Hi CuriousTraveler,

"Azitral" is one of the brand names you might find, but keep in mind that there could be other brands or generic versions as well. It’s a commonly used antibiotic and should be available at most pharmacies.

Here are some tips:1. Ask for "azitromicina" (the Spanish name for azithromycin) if the pharmacist doesn’t seem to know what you mean by "Azitral."2. If you have your prescription with you, show it to the pharmacist; they will be able to provide a generic version or another brand.3. Always double-check the medication's packaging and ask for a receipt in case there’s any confusion later.

Most pharmacies should stock it, but just in case, it might be a good idea to call ahead if possible.

Hope this helps with your trip preparations!

Thanks so much, PharmacyPro! This is really reassuring. I'll definitely bring my prescription along and make sure to ask for "azitromicina" as well.

If anyone else has any additional tips or experiences, please share!

Hi CuriousTraveler,

Great that you have this information now. In addition to the advice given:

  1. Be Prepared: Always carry your prescription with you and a list of symptoms if needed.
  2. Local Advice: Ask locals for recommendations on which pharmacies are reliable, especially if you're in a new city.
  3. Insurance Check: If traveling internationally, double-check with your insurance provider about coverage or any specific requirements when using medication abroad.

Have a safe trip!
