Forum Title: Doxycylline Monohydrate - My Experience & Dosage Advice?

Nickname: HealthNinjaPosted on: Oct 12, 2023 at 15:47 PM

Hi all,

I recently got a prescription for doxycycline monohydrate from my doctor. I'm in Canada and was wondering if anyone else has used this antibiotic? How did it work out for you? Also, is there any specific advice or precautions I should keep in mind regarding dosage and side effects?

Thanks!HN

Hi HealthNinja,

Welcome to the forum! Doxycycline monohydrate is a common antibiotic used for various bacterial infections. In Canada, it's generally prescribed as an effective treatment option.

Regarding dosage and side effects:

  • Dosage: The typical starting dose for most adults is 100 mg (two tablets of 50 mg each) taken once or twice daily with meals to minimize stomach irritation.

  • Side Effects: Common ones include nausea, diarrhea, and sensitivity to sunlight. Ensure you take it as directed by your healthcare provider and complete the full course even if you feel better.

If you have any specific concerns or experience unusual side effects, contact your doctor immediately for further advice.

Thanks DocInBlue! That's really helpful. I'll make sure to take it with food and be extra cautious about sunlight exposure.

Just a follow-up question: Is there anything specific I should avoid while taking this medication? Like certain foods or medications?

Hi HN,

Great questions! When taking doxycycline monohydrate:

  • Foods: Avoid consuming dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) or other calcium-rich foods within two hours of your dose. Calcium can interfere with the absorption of doxycycline.

  • Medications: Be cautious about taking antacids, iron supplements, or medications containing aluminum, magnesium, zinc, and calcium at the same time as doxycycline. If you need to take these, try to space them out by a couple of hours.

It's also wise to avoid alcohol while on this medication, as it can affect your liver function and increase side effects like nausea.

If you're taking any other medications or supplements, make sure to inform your doctor so they can provide personalized advice tailored to your specific case.

Hi HN,

Just a quick tip from personal experience - don't forget the sunscreen! Sun sensitivity can be quite intense with doxycycline. I ended up with an unexpected sunburn last summer.
