Hey everyone, I just started taking Accutane for my severe acne. It's pretty strong stuff. Does anyone have any tips or things to watch out for while on this treatment? Also, should I be extra careful with skincare products?

Hi HealthFanatic,

Great question! Accutane is indeed a powerful medication that can significantly improve severe acne. However, it's important to follow your doctor’s instructions closely and be mindful of several key points.

  1. Skin Care: Since Accutane tends to dry out the skin, you'll need a gentle skincare routine. Use mild cleansers without alcohol or harsh chemicals. Avoid products containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) as they can irritate your skin more.

  2. Sun Protection: Sunlight is your enemy during this treatment. Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily and try to avoid direct sunlight whenever possible, especially during peak hours.

  3. Lip Care: Accutane can cause severe dryness of the lips. Carry lip balm with you and apply it frequently to keep your lips moisturized.

  4. Supplements: Since Accutane is a form of Vitamin A, taking additional supplements high in Vitamin A or isotretinoin could be dangerous. Stick to a multivitamin without added Vitamin A unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

  5. Eye Care: Your eyes may feel dry and irritated as well. Use artificial tears if needed and keep an eye on any changes that might require further medical attention.

  6. Pregnancy Warning: If you are a woman of childbearing age, make sure you understand the risks regarding pregnancy. Accutane can cause severe birth defects. You need to have two negative pregnancy tests before starting treatment and use at least one form of effective contraception during your entire course of treatment.

  7. Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ups with your dermatologist or physician. They will monitor your progress, manage side effects, and make adjustments as necessary.

Remember, while Accutane can be highly effective for treating acne, it's crucial to follow the prescribed regimen and keep up with all medical appointments. If you experience any unusual side effects (like severe dryness, mood changes, or vision problems), contact your doctor immediately.

Good luck with your treatment!

Hey HealthFanatic,

I was on Accutane for my acne a few years back and DermDoc247’s advice is spot-on! A couple of extra tips I’d add:

  • Diet: Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water can help with the dryness caused by Accutane.
  • Hair Care: Your hair might also get drier, so consider using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.
  • Mental Health: It’s normal to feel more sensitive or even depressed during treatment. Make sure you have a good support system in place.

Hope these extra tips help!

Absolutely, ClearSkinPro's points are very valid too! Keeping hydrated is key, and being aware of your mental health during this period is crucial. Everyone reacts differently to medications, so if you feel any unusual changes or distress, always reach out to a healthcare professional for support.
